Dr. Yang is the co-founder and Chairman of the Board of BGI-China, one of the major genomics centers in the world. He is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences), a foreign fellow of European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), and a foreign academician of National Academy of Sciences of the USA, Germany and India, as well as that of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters.
He and his partners have made significant contributions to the International HGP, HapMap Project, 1000 Genomes Project, and other human omics research, as well as sequencing and analyzing genomes of many other animals, plants, and microorganisms, with hundreds of publications in Science, Nature, Cell and other internationally prestigious journals.
Dr. Yang obtained his Ph.D. from University of Copenhagen (Denmark) and postdoctoral trainings in France and USA. He has received many awards and honors, including “Research Leader of the Year 2002” by Scientific American, “Award in Biology” by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in 2006, and “Award for Outstanding Achievements” by the Human Genome Organization (HUGO) in 2010.
